Description
Denmark, mid-20th century
This elegant white opaline tureen was produced by Bing & Grøndahl in Copenhagen, one of Denmark’s most respected porcelain manufacturers. The underside bears the factory mark Made in Denmark, and the sculptural seahorse finial crowning the lid identifies the piece as part of a refined decorative serving line produced in the mid-20th century.
The form is generous and architectural, softened by a delicately textured surface that catches the light with a subtle, milky glow. The domed lid is finished with the seahorse handle, both whimsical and restrained, while the body and handles are accented with restrained hand-applied gilt at the rim and grips.
The balance here is quintessentially Scandinavian: decorative, but never excessive; functional, yet undeniably sculptural. Whether used as a serving piece or styled as a standalone object, this tureen brings quiet ceremony to a table or interior.
